Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds: The Boatman's Call

Enfrentarse a la discografía del prolífico Nick Cave puede convertirse en una auténtica odisea. El australiano ha publicado más de 15 álbumes -contando sólo los de estudio-, de entre los cuales destaca el melancólico The Boatman's Call (1997), en el que Cave se hace acompañar de nuevo por sus inseparables Bad Seeds para cantar canciones de amor y, sobretodo, de desamor.

"Into my arms", la magnífica pieza que abre The Boatman's Call, muestra a un Nick Cave más intimista que nunca. Una suave melodía de piano, arropada por una delicada línea de bajo, otorga casi todo el protagonismo a la profunda e inconfundible voz, esta vez rota, del cantante australiano. En cambio, "West Country Girl" se mueve sobre un ritmo heredado de las películas de vaqueros para narrarnos (literalmente) una historia que habla supuestamente de su ex PJ Harvey, mientras que la excepcional "(Are You) The One That I've Been Waiting For?" es un canto a la esperanza teñido con una sombra que llega a abarcar la nostálgica e indispensable "Where Do We Go Now But Nowhere?". 

A juzgar por sus letras, sus ambientes permanente oscuros y sus reflexiones espirituales, The Boatman's Call se convierte en el autorretrato de Cave en los momentos difíciles de su propia vida. Un retrato tan negro y honesto como el de la inquietante portada del disco. 

Un excelente punto de partida para descubrir uno de los artistas más completos e interesantes de nuestro tiempo. Una obra maestra sin matices.
