Super Furry Animals: Rings Around the World

Si hay algún disco que defina la música de Super Furry Animals, probablemente sea Rings Around the World (2001). Uno de los pocos álbumes que sigue sonando fresco, original e inimitable por muchas veces que se escuche, y que ratifica a los galeses como una de las bandas pop más influyentes de las últimas décadas.
Enfrentarse por primera vez a los Super Furry Animals puede no resultar fácil. Su fuerte personalidad y sus pequeños -pero continuos- coqueteos con la experimentación tal vez provoquen que el oyente desvíe su atención. O al contrario: tal vez consigan despertar y enamorar a más de uno.
Lo que debe ser difícil es no rendirse ante canciones como la magníficas "Juxtapozed With U", "Presidential Suite" o "It's Not the End of the World?", que muestran el lado más amable de la banda y encandilan desde los acordes iniciales. Y es que, ante todo, Super Furry Animals es un grupo pop. Psicodélico (el artwork del disco no engaña), o como se le quiera llamar, pero pop al fin y al cabo. No es por casualidad que los mismos Paul McCartney y John Cale figuren en los créditos de Rings Around the World. Aunque si hay algo que queda claro con este álbum es que la banda procedente de Gales no se marca ningún límite y que su ambición parece no tener fin. Sólo es necesario escuchar "No Sympathy" para entender de qué hablo.
Rings Around the World suena como un álbum de los 60 filtrado con dosis de electrónica, mucha imaginación y algo de mala leche. Y Super Furry Animals siguen siendo únicos en su especie.
